Abstract
Wesleyan University, a residential liberal arts institution with a population of approximately 3,100 students, is located in Middletown, Connecticut. In line with its baccalaureate and master’s Carnegie classification, the majority of the curriculum is focused on undergraduate education, although there is a small population of graduate students in doctoral programs. There are two libraries on campus, Olin Memorial Library and the smaller Science Library. The library staff consists of sixteen non-tenure-track librarians (including the university librarian) and eighteen support staff. The university librarian in 2014 had been appointed in 2009 upon the retirement of the prior incumbent. Previously, she had been the associate university librarian.
In preparing this chapter, the authors retrospectively utilized John Kotter’s eight stage process of creating change to analyze the impact of events that affected the library’s organization. The authors also assessed the actions taken, commencing in fall 2014, by those in library leadership positions to move the library forward. Kotter’s model is useful in creating the framework that describes the organizational renewal of the Wesleyan Library
